I read the Feb 19th article in the WSJ re the New York Times article on IBM. In the WSJ, I believe it made passing reference to the fact (quotation or otherwise) that IBM has been =not= stating these sales of assets as one-time gains, and reducing SG&A instead, for the last =ten= years (!!) and no one has made mention of it. Until now.

Ten years...is this what is referred to as a "momentum play"??

No one seems to remember the analysts applauding IBM for promising to avoid reporting items as "exceptional" per the analyts' request. The talking heads don't ever take responsibility for anything or admit error. IMHO, Whitney Tilson either understand the context of IBM's business restructuring over the past five years and it's impact on revenue. Apparently the concept of EPS has also escaped Tilson's grasp.
