even A teams can do much more damage if batteries of artillery can be called for fire missions.

I completely concur. Air strikes are one thing, but having a battery of highly accurate, more "surgical" indirect fire assets (the hammer versus wrecking ball approach) make the Crusader artillery system desirable.

It's ability to use one gun to "hang" multiple projectiles for a "time on target" barrage also limits the need for multiple guns. (for the less knowlegable, one crusader gun can fire up to 8 different rounds at different trajectories, computed to strike the target at the same time, something that used to require multiple tubes to accomplish, thus making each platform equivalent to a battery of artillery tubes).

But you are also right on target with regard to its excessive weight, making it difficult to deploy to remote regions. They recently cut the weight by 25% to 41 tons so more than one vehicle can be carried by C-5s and C-17s.

Click on the MRSI (multiple rounds, simultaneous impact) link (Requires Quicktime).

And the Paladin (current artillery system) Crusader comparison video is quite interesting to describe the difference in firing rates between the two systems.

It takes more than 8 minutes for the crew of a Paladin to fire 15 rounds, while the Crusader can deliver the same quantity in 1 and 1/2 minutes, crucial when your target is moving fast (like armored formations).
