We are just using language at different levels of precision. I would say that France is a "Catholic country," or that Massachusetts is a "Democratic state," purely in a descriptive way, referring to the preferences of the majority of their residents.

I don't see why descriptive labels of this sort should cause insult or injury. It never bothered me to be a Republican living in Massachusetts. I've had periods in my life of being an agnostic, and never felt dissed at all the signs and symbols of religiosity around me.

We all have different levels of sensitivity in such matters.
