Milo, Re: "If your equipment footprint is 50 to 100% larger than someone else's and requires 50% more cooling you're not going to sell much of your equipment."

Again you seem to be applying your high volume mechanics to Itanium - even though Itanium will not be high volume, at first. Of course, it will have many differentiating features and better platform support, which is what will entice the patronage of high end customers. Building up the platform can be done in stages. You don't need it perfect from the start.

Re: "We make decisions on vendors from these very key points as space is a large premium, power plant capacity for the future, and HVAC units take up space as well."

Then you should know that there are many different markets out there - some that appreciate density and power efficiency, while others that desire performance and stability and features at any "cost". Fortunately for Intel, they can fill multiple segments with their multiple lines of CPUs - Tualatins, Prestonias, McKinleys, etc.

And if you're a large commercial customer, you make a yourself a tempting target whenever capacity limits are being approached and load shedding becomes necessary.

LDC's would much rather supply all but two or three customers than have to curtail service to hundreds or thousands of smaller customers.

It's also much simpler to cut service to one or two commercial feeds than to try to cut service to hundreds or thousands. Retail customers are off-limits - despite best efforts to track such households, you never know when you're cutting service to the respirator of some litigator's mother.
