Third-generation, or 3G, mobile technology is expected to provide Internet access, data and streaming video at five to 25 times faster than current 2G speeds. "We will launch a commercial 3G service in the third quarter of next year," SK IMT Co, a 3G unit of top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co, said in a statement. Separately, KT ICOM Co, a mobile unit of Korea's largest fixed-line telecom company KT Corp, also said it would begin a 3G service early next year. "We will select 3G telecoms equipment suppliers in the first half of this year and complete a pilot service test by year's end," it said. " KT ICOM chose LG Electronics Inc early in February as the 3G network supplier for the demonstration of its next-generation mobile services during the 2002 World Cup final soccer games in May and June. Korea granted 3G licences late in 2000 to two consortia led by SK Telecom and KT, which promised to launch commercial 3G services using W-CDMA technology, widely adopted by European companies and Japan's NTT DoCoMo, no later than 2003. LG Telecom Ltd, Korea's smallest mobile carrier, also won a 3G licence to operate 3G mobile services based on Qualcomm's cdma2000 technology. But industry watchers said SKT and KT were reluctant to invest in deploying W-CDMA 3G networks, while upgrading their current services to help save costs. SK Telecom conducted a pilot test of cdma2000 1x EV DO, an upgrade from 2G CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile services, in a couple of big cities in January. KT also offers an initial EV DO service in limited areas through its mobile service unit KTF Co. The International Telecommunications Union regards cdma 2000 1x EV DO as a 3G service. Shares of SK finished up 2.3 percent at 263,000 won on Friday, outperforming a 0.56 percent gain in the main stock index. KT was up 4.3 percent at 52,900 won. (US$1=1308.8 won) << - Eric -
