Slacker,

<< nitpicker who shall remain nameless >>

Conjecture is that both DoCoMo and J-Phone will introduce dual-mode PDC/WCDMA handsets at some time. I do find the BWCS wording somewhat ambiguous.

Here is another similar cut at the same material:

Note the comment: "dual network system ... allowing users who own both a new FOMA handset and an old PDC model to use the same number for both handsets."

NTT DoCoMo said on Friday that it plans to expand the service area of its "FOMA" 3G service to cover "90% of Japan's populated areas" by the end of this year.

The company first plans to have covered "virtually every major city," amounting to 60% coverage of populated areas, by 1 April, before embarking on the next phase.

DoCoMo will expand its existing 3G coverage in the Tokai and Kansai provinces of Japan in early March, while the service will be launched in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu from 1 April.

The company said it will introduce a dual network system by the end of August this year, allowing users who own both a new FOMA handset and an old PDC model to use the same number for both handsets.

Prior to the introduction of the dual network, between 1 April and 31 August this year, DoCoMo said customers using two FOMA phones, or a FOMA and PDC or PHS phone, will receive discounts on their monthly basic fees for each phone.

The discounts will be up to 55% for FOMA phones, including a waiver of the application fee, with specific rates dependent on the customer's billing plan, DoCoMo said.

Meanwhile, the company said it will begin selling its first 3G handset equipped for both the company's "i-motion" video-clip transmission service and videophone services on 1 March. <<
