Yeah, a lot of people call them "Bobcats" since that's probably the best-known brand. And I don't know this for sure, but wouldn't be surprised if they were the first brand.

My daughter drove the backhoe quite a bit today with me in it. She'd like to drive it by herself but I told her she can't until she has a few dozen hours in it with me and can demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of it; not just driving it and using the front loader bucket. That'll be a year or so. <g>

She told me it's the "funnest" machine she can imagine operating. Then I showed her the inside of the skidsteer and said "See a steering wheel in there?" Her response was "Cool!". Just like her old man.

That's what makes a skidsteer so fun. They have a throttle pedal (use of it is optional, as there's typically a hand throttle too) and no brake pedal or steering wheel.

The joystick on the right controls the bucket and the one on the left controls all aspects of moving the machine. Just move it in the direction you want the machine to go. Hold it to the left or right without pushing forward or backward and it'll turn completely around without moving forward or backward.
