Experiments were performed without their consent in the American South on unknowing blacks who had syphilis. The experiment consisted largely in intentionally not treating them. Is this an example of the exercise of Christian virtue?

I think that the problem here is that Christian virtue is being confused with Christian piety, and that an age in which broad-based lip service was paid to Christian morality is being mistaken for a golden age of virtue. It is an error, or course, but a very common one; perhaps we should not upset anyone by pointing out that piety and virtue are not necessarily the same thing.
