Don't confuse the economics of long haul fiberoptics with those of wireless. They are quite different. First of all, competition is more regional. Second, there are major cost differences between providers. Prices will not drop below the marginal cost of the high cost provider. In this case, it is Cingular and AWE. Sprint and Verizon and Alltel will be fine since their costs are significantly lower. In long haul there were rapid changes in technology that kept undercutting the investments providers made the year before. In wireless, AWE and Cingular are still living with the mistakes they made 10 years ago, and they appear to be stubborn enough to stick with them another 5 years. There is no comparison here and Barrons and Wall Street has gone nuts shooting wireless because they are afraid the same thing will happen here that happened to the CLECS and Global Crossing, Level Three, World Com and Quest.
