biogold
or
nanogold

Biomining is possible by developing plants or animals that concentrate the substance you wish to obtain. The plant or animal is harvested and processed. The ability to transfer genetic characteristics progresses very rapidly and it is only a matter of time before facility is achieved with this method, golden ears of corn would replace all the worlds bobs.
Nanogold is also a possibility. If Betty could be made small enough she could assemble gold out of constituent atoms. You could provide betty with a diet of lead and she would turn it into gold, with a more advanced betty you could just activate her and collect the gold, free lunch.

bob will be a machine, he will produce value with very little human intervention.
