Cringely was speaking of range of PCS phones, but he may have been thinking of cell ±radius, which, for CDMA at least, can "range" from as small as a mile or even less up to 15 miles, or with the cell extenders or "boomers," more than 100 miles.

The phones (CDMA, at least) themselves will work at distances of way beyond a mile from a base station. They are not legally able to be powered beyond the legal limit of a watt or two, mebbe four(?) and nobody wants to carry around a 60-foot antenna, so it is ridiculous to dwell on those issues.
