re: Symbian and Emblaze MMP and Java Apps

>> Symbian Community Delivering 3G Revenue Opportunities

25th February
3G

(This story was filed by a Symbian staff member on his Nokia 9210, from 3GSM.)

Multimedia support and delivery in its many forms is a driver for 3G success. Emblaze, a key Symbian technology partner, is one of many companies demonstrating advanced mobile multimedia and games for Symbian OS phones.

On show is the Emblaze Mobile Multimedia Platform (MMP) for the Nokia 9210 Communicator. According to Emblaze, multimedia can be streamed on the Communicator over GSM CSD or HSCSD, or downloaded for offline use.

Emblaze's offering embodies Symbian's technology partners' - and the wireless industry's - determination to offer integrated and compelling services to drive operator revenues as packet-switched networks roll out.

The Emblaze MMP was one of the first mobile multimedia solutions to be rolled out worldwide. It is compatible with air interface standards including GSM CSD and HSCSD, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, WCDMA and cdma2000. MMP offers multimedia messaging like video messages, location-based services including maps and guides, and entertainment like movies and music.

Symbian is also demonstrating, on its stand, the power of Symbian OS as a revenue-generating platform with two applications for Symbian OS phones.

The applications, both written in Java, were supplied by Mr Goodliving, an independent software vendor based in Finland. Mobile games offer network operators the opportunity for micro-payments for downloading game levels or for playing online.

Space Taxi is a slick pinball game designed to run on PersonalJava on the Nokia 9210 (it cleverly uses the entire screen). The second game being demonstrated by the Symbian team is a brand new game implementation called the Bunny Game. It runs on MIDP on the Nokia 7650, a Symbian OS v6.1 phone, which features Bluetooth and GPRS capabilities. The games are available at the Nokia Software marketplace.

Application and service developers are making an impact at 3GSM 2002. In the year of the smartphone, network operators and hardware vendors are seeing a growing market of advanced data services using Symbian OS phones. Advanced data service enablement will be part of the focus of Symbian Developer Expo, where delegates will find out more about the Symbian ecosystem from Symbian and its partners. Expo essentials will include vital guides to developing for Symbian OS phones, and special tracks for Nokia's Symbian OS phone developers. <<
