I've apparently missed something (and I don't mean that facetiously.) Where are the commercial W-CDMA networks up and running?

I think the word "commercial" was used to refer to the fact that the equipment that Alcatel and Ericsson were using is currently being shipped to operators. They were using real basestations instead of some sort of test network using a semi loaded with equipment. There isnt a commercial W-CDMA network up and running in Cannes (or France in general).

OTOH, NTT Docomo has had a commercial network up and running since October with 44,000 subs. The network is based on a older version of the W-CDMA standard and is going to need an upgrade to a later standard.

In any case, there is going to be quite a bit of W-CDMA infrastructure equipment installed by the end of the year....we just need dual-mode (W-CDMA/GSM) handsets to start shipping in commercial quantities.
