You have to realize that this is just my guess based on what I've seen so far. I could be wrong, but it looks as if the current P4 just doesn't have enough resources for hyperthreading unless you play some games.

No, this is worse. If it depending on an exceptionally bright compiler, that would be bad enough. But this depends on the programmer to do the job, a much worse situation.
