However, South Korean mobile operators will launch their 3G networks using the non-Qualcomm WCDMA-technology. CDMA is an abbreviation for code divided multiple access. The 3G radio technology in based on code division, but there are two main ways of carrying this out: The WCDMA, where “W” refers to wideband and CDMA-2000 that closely is related to (Qualcomm’s) narrowband CDMA or CDMAOne technology. Mobile operators with GSM networks with and their vendors form the WCDMA camp but a group of operators with CDMAOne networks have also decided to take WCDMA as a their basic technology. Now two Korean operators have announced that they will launch their 3G services next year with WCDMA technology. Usually it is believed that it is much easier and faster to open up 3G services for the CDMAOne companies than for the GSM network owners. SK IMT Co, a 3G unit of top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co, promises to launch a commercial 3G service in the third quarter of next year. SKT plans to spend USD 1.22 billion until 2005 on deploying W-CDMA 3G networks KT ICOM Co, a mobile unit of Korea's largest fixed-line telecom company KT Corp, said they would begin 3G services early next year. The company will select 3G telecom equipment suppliers in the first half of this year and complete a pilot service test by year's end. Both SKT and KT conducted pilot tests of CDMA2000 1x EV DO in a couple of places. KT ICOM chose LG ELECTRONICS INC early in February as the 3G-network supplier for the demonstration of its next-generation mobile services during the 2002 World Cup final soccer games in May and June. Both SK Telecom and KT will use the WCDMA technology. LG Telecom Ltd., Korea's smallest mobile operator will operate 3G services based on Qualcomm's cdma2000 technology. << - Eric -
