I understand that you were not promoting a litmus test; it was President Bush, Sr, who presented his own when he said "I don’t know that atheists should be considered citizens, nor should they be considered patriots."

And my post to you was to make clear that I recognized you and others here were being descriptive. Its purpose was to explain a perhaps too-great touchiness. Fear is not too strong a word: "I don’t know that atheists should be considered citizens, nor should they be considered patriots."

Remember: There are atheists (and of course Jews) who have been, in their lives, personally persecuted by Christians. When the president presents his "litmus test" as above, we may get... discomfited.

Again: I understand that no such litmus test for citizenship or patriotism was proposed by you or by anyone else on BB. I am trying to explain to you why atheists sometimes overreact to what is presented as mere statistical description.
