Labeling the population has merit in demographic generalizing. It is problematic on a personal level for persons who find being associated with the identity too compromising. The reactions can be so intense as to cause sociologically destructive positioning; especially when the number of round pegs is large and growing.

Ummm... If this comes down to "We are, in some vague sense, a Christian nation", I'll give a "Maybe" vote on it. It does depend on how you define "Christian" and "Christian nation". And those are endless swamps, particularly the first.

I remember back on the old, pre-Web net in the alt.atheism newsgroup (equivalent to a thread)` the definition that was finally agreed on among the non-Christians was that "If you say you are a Christian, you are." The Christians, however, adamantly refused to accept that definition and set off an endless war among themselves.

Speaking of which, it occurred to me that maybe certain topics should be declared off limits because they have been endlessly rehashed with no conclusion. And this "Christian nation" thing would certainly qualify.
