Well, I was right in step with you until the very end... I don't think the change was necessary either. My recollection of the times tells me that the issue was not one which stirred a whole lot of passion, or even interest, one way or the other. Also, I do recognize that the courts are often, of necessity, the guardians of the rights of minorities. Hmmm ... we disagree only about the importance of the Pledge itself. I think it is a most fitting way to begin each school day by having our children pledge allegiance to their nation. More than perhaps any other society on earth, we need to reaffirm that while we are many people, we are but one nation. I think modest rituals such as this also serve as a tribute to, and reminder of, the many before us who sacrificed their lives in defense of our flag, so that we could be who and what we are. I don't mean to sound preachy, but this is the way I feel about it. JC
