Carl, human nature isn't immutable, and neither is a people's sense of grievance. The South had a sense of grievance for many years after the Civil War, but they did not have a leadership (or neighbors) that urged them on to suicidal guerilla warfare instead of reconstructing their economy.

If the rest of the Arabs were ever to decide that they preferred economic development to keeping the conflict going, then they might align in favor of a settlement instead of always working to sabotage it. That's the real hope. We'll see what things look like after the US invades Iraq (this is looking more likely imo).

Meantime I found Morris advice self-contradictory. The semi-occupation is corrupting, so the Israelis should withdraw in preparation for having to reconquer the territories. Does that make any sense?
