Believe it or not, there is a relation between the tech bubble and gold demand in India. Several people I know, who are otherwise good for nothing (in terms of qualifications) people got trained as programmers or technical support. Then there are really good Indian programmers who worked for US companies - either directly or via subcontract with Indian companies like Infosys. Some came to the US on 50 or 60K salaries. They jumped ship 3 times a year to make 100+ for year. With all the disposable income many traded stocks and saw instant riches. Some of that money went back to India. When they visited India, they bought gold, lots of it. They sent money to parents, siblings and even friends. They too bought some gold. (I have no documented evidence for this. These are the observations of an Indian himself.)
