Nope, not even the first direct claim. Dr. Jacobs said that GSM1X would enhance spectral efficiency and provide 386 kbps data speeds for a 1.25 mhz gsm carrier. He said that 1xEV DO would enhance data speeds for GSM1X to 2.4 MBS for a single 1.25 MHZ gsm carrier. He did not say anything about enhancing WCDMA to 2.4 MBS in a 5 MHZ carrier. I was intrigued by his claim that GSM1X could be used in existing spectrum. The only caveat would be - outside of Europe.

I have still not seen any technology for 5 MHZ spectrum beyond 386 kbps. I guess we need to reach the conclusion for 3gPP2 before we see the full potential for voice and data in UMTS networks. Standards for 5 MHZ channels will be done soon - I hope.

I wouldn't qualify the white paper as FUD. It only compares the economics of a 1.25 MHZ 1XEV carriers vs. a GPRS .20 MHZ carrier & a 3.84 MHZ WCDMA carrier. I don't see any discussion about the performance of 1XEV in a 5 MHZ channel. Of course, these results need to be standardized by 3GPP2.

I admire Qualcomm's restraint from discussing the measurable gains in capacity and data rates for 1xEV DO in a 5 MHZ WCDMA carrier & the application of 1xEV DO to a 5 MHZ WCDMA carrier. To date, there only discussion of 1x/1XEV has been restricted gains in capacity and data speed for GSM1X in existing 1.25 MHZ GSM carriers or "new spectrum". The definition of "new spectrum" at this very moment would be limited to additional 1.25 MHZ carriers. Nothing has been standardized for 1xEV as an upgrade to 3GPP approved standards for 307 kbps data speeds in 5 MHZ WCDMA carriers. Let's hope the standards process finishes their work very soon.
