Vodafone chooses Siemens' global location server platform By Total Telecom staff 12 March 2002 Siemens will supply Vodafone with a location enabling server platform for use in its networks worldwide, the companies said on Tuesday, allowing Vodafone and third parties to create a range of location-enabled applications. Vodafone said the platform, a gateway through which applications find out the current location of a customer's mobile phone, will offer a standard interface for application providers, who will also be offered value-added "geo-toolbox" facilities such as maps, addresses and routing information. Customers will be able to use the location-based services when they roam, Vodafone said, and control the identification of their location, choosing how, when and whether they may be located by applications. Vodafone is currently rolling out its location enabling platform in the U.K. and Germany and expects it to be rolled out by an unspecified number of its European operator subsidiaries "in the next few months." "Our global platform will not only allow us to deliver services globally but also to offer a standard interface for application developers across all Vodafone networks," Thomas Geitner, chief executive of Vodafone Global Products and Services Ltd., said in a statement. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
