seems strange with all the news about the economy being strong that mortgage rates are falling.

Mortgage rates have more to do with inflation expectations and the return grandma wants on her Ginnie Mae bonds then supply and demand. The FED doesn't interfere with long rates, it did in the past and it was disastrous. It needs long rates left to the market as an inflation indicator.
