suicidal guerilla warfare

There is a terrific new History book out called:

"April 1865 : The Month That Saved America"

that shows how close we came to Guerilla warfare. It really came down to the way Grant treated Lee at Appomattox that saved us from a real long term mess.

Carl, interesting post. This intrigued me:

Yet the antebellum South entered into the Civil War (1861-65) a region confident of swift victory. Even
many Union military leaders conceded the martial skills and efficiency of the Confederate Army,
three-fourths of it infantry.

You never can tell just how the fortune of war might turn, but the South was toast, long term, wasn't it? What was the price of a healthy slave? Compared to ten years labourer's wages? What is the economic contribution of a slave compared to that of a free labourer? Are these relevant questions?

The North gave the South full rights, after a few years of occupation.

Hmm, Carl, I take it you have decided Reconstruction simply didn't happen.
