Hi JohnM; When I was in school there was probably a rule against students keeping guns on campus, but the fact is that we had more guns than students in at least one building I lived in.

The basic problem is that if everything you could possibly do was put up to careful consideration, all activity would be outlawed. Heck, they probably wouldn't let you keep girls, fireworks, construction equipment or beer in your dorm room either, but there wasn't a big shortage of that either (except the women).

Well, you should visit some of the schools in the DC area. I know a school teacher who works in one of the DC suburbs, who has been in the system for 30 years or so. He says they have the zero tolerance policies you describe, but still they have kids toting weapons with them. They even have metal detectors, but that doesn't matter since every school HAS TO HAVE multiple exits/entrances for fire safety purposes and the kids smuggle them into the building with little effort.

Weapons in school are not the problem. Where the problem lies is in attitudes about what kind of rights a child (and parents) should have vis-a-vis the school officials. If the school officials aren't afraid of being whacked (on or off school property), they are scared ****less of being sued for all they have.

I asked my friend the other day (he is black) what he thinks about school uniform proposals. He stated that is exactly what they need, if only to subvert the authority of the school gangs and their colors. Tough to be cool (cruel) when you're forced to where a shirt and tie and a blazer.

John,
forgetting about the laws and Constitution for a moment...this is my personal view on firearms and family safety today. this is a direct quote from chapter five of my book.

btw, i wrote this book for family and close friends...it details my family's preparation and plans.

"Please realize where I am coming from on guns. Having grown up with uncles who were servicemen, marksmen and hunters, and having extensive military weapons training, I have an uncommon familiarity with a wide variety of weapons. I know that many Americans are uncomfortable and unfamiliar with guns. I am not suggesting you run out and acquire an arsenal. I do think it is important to think about the kinds of things that might happen in a totally chaotic situation and to prepare for them. In a chaotic and fearful atmosphere otherwise normally calm people may become violent. And there is always the possibility a terrorist or mugger may confront you. The mere presence of a weapon may be sufficient to thwart an attack. For many folks, weapons other than firearms may be much more appropriate. I suggest considering pepper spray or mace. Even simple, common items like screwdrivers, wrench handles, hockey sticks, and baseball bats can be effective defensive weapons."

many Americans who are not familiar with and/or fear firearms use other techniques for safety...they include home and vehicle alarms, motion detector lights, cell phones, dogs, fences, dead bolts, etc. etc..

in chapter eight, "knives, Guns and Explosives", i explain each of the current favorite terrorist weapons and how folks like you can survive the attack by defending themselves using simple techniques and likely readily available items.

the tool i invented and named "The One Minute Fallout Zone Calculator" comes with the book and with easy to understand directions in chapter four. it is based on what i learned at the nuclear weapons course. i have taught this to about 12 groups now and everyone who attended can now plot a likely fallout zone for a chemical, biological or nuclear attack in their area...more importantly they can use this info to calculate an escape route....and all of this in one minute or less.

i am planning to ask the homeland defense folks to teach everyone in America this simple technique.

the book will be shipping monday or tuesday to those who ordered it from me.

the interested publisher will get their copy tomorrow...i have no idea what they will do.
