The two have been pushing to get in since 1995. teh big problem is just like the PC and windows, they refuse to rethink how they run teh software in order to meet the real needs of a cellphone.

Microsoft is of hte mindset that they are the biggest priority in the operating system and refuse to let the phone have top billing and hold out their software on real time system calls. They also feel that it is entirely ok to have more than 8 MB of memory in a cellphone, no matter what the cost and that they will just specify it and let the industry drive down memory price, power, and size. The last paragraph with the Microsoft quote shows me that they are still in that same mode. What does Windows have to do with the real cellphones apps? I surely hope that if my cellphone run by usoft has 16 MB of memory that it does not crash my phone due to a resource shortage, as my windows ME does daily wiht more than 1GB of memory.

Intel is into ONE BIG PROCESSOR and they want to put a pentium into a cellphone, irreguardless of power and and need. Some light may be opening with Intel taking on ARM and microsoft trying to redo the WinCE system downwards with less memory requirements...but I don;t give it much hope until they change their overall approach to the market.

MSFT is competing in dangerous waters, considering the all IP environment of 1xEV or WCDMA does not require a stand alone operating system. Look at the disaster of PALM based PDA's. Soon, the cell phone makers will wise up and make a hot synch stand for cell phones to connect to your laptop or pc. I would be much more impressed with a laptop or pc that could deliver all of the applciations that Qualcomm's all digital version of the internet has to offer - voip, high speed internet for downloads, wireless cable, gaming, unlimited browsing. etc...

Windows is only as good as the information you put into it. It can't deliver anything in the way of real time information because there is no spectrum delivering real time video, voice, games, or news. The value of a real time, high speed access is 10 times the value of any operating system from MSFT. BREW users in Korea have increased data revenues by 400%, 9.5% across the entire base. When is the last time that XP helped any telecom company generate more revenues - NEVER!!

I would trade in a Windows XP platform for a BREW enabled 1XEV platform any day.

The success of the internet will rest directly in the always on internet connection. It is a 24/7 internet connection. I think that MSFT needs to specfically target products like Windows Media Player into cell phones like they are doing for MP3 devices and stereo equipment. They totally flake out any time they get close to wireless.

CDMA & BREW have pitted the resources of the entire world against incumbent companies like MSFT & Nokia for 3G. 10 million downloads of BREW develop kits have already been made. 200 products are at various stages of certification for gaming, location, media and entertainment. I don't see how MSFT Stinger would have any real value added for a 3G cell phone.

It is not ironic that they skipped CDMA2000 and are planning on UMTS markets to open up. They can't distinguish themselves in the food chain for CDMA2000. They will be shut out of the WCDMA market too. They have absolutely nothing to offer in wireless voice and internet access. However, I might pay $1 a month fee for a WMP BREW application on my cell phone to listen to my WMP files.

correct me if I am wrong, but Msft-Intel strategy seems to buck the view that the device will be dumb and the network provide the power; do folks want to pay the extra money for their handsets-devices to be independent computers?

What phones are offered on ZAPP?

Did you listen the QCOM audio yesterday? At the end, Dr J talked about a trip to Romania and ZAPP.

--- transcript-
I might mention a couple of other things. I did come back from in last few days ago, from Bucharest, in Romania, and their first 1X system is up and running at 450 Mhz and It was kind of fun, I went into the office of the Ministers and on his desk he had his computer cabled over to one of ZAPP's phones and was running it a much higher data rate than he could get over the wire. They are getting, fairly consistently about 150 Kbits per second the present phone generation provides. The next ones will go to 300 and higher. And so, it was kind of fun to see that. The service also worked as far as voice was concerned exceeding well. So we have that first penetration of 1X technology into Europe at this point.

Also, I don't know if it got stressed or not, but at the Cannes conference, we had Brew operating, not only over 1X and 1XDVDO but also over GPRS. And so, the capability to provide these applications across many platforms, and of course, we will be demonstrating shortly over UMTS. So the intent with Brew is not to limit it to any particular air interface but to have it available over whatever data air interface people are using. It is going to be an exciting time looking ahead, We are of course, anxious to see KDDI launch, we are looking forward to the expanded launches here in the US and North America and other parts of the world on 1X technology and looking to seeing how the world reacts to see 1XDVDO in Korea at the world cup game.
