Just another Friday night in Austin Texas...started off the night at Polvo's for some of our favorite tacos..the it was off to Elephant Room for some real jazz (not that crap they call "jazz" that get's played on the radio)..Took a buddy of out for his first taste of Brannon Temple, drummer. This guy makes all the rest look like rank amateurs. He barely even uses his snare and kick..only lightly and with much tastefulness. Add trumpet, sax and stand-up bass and you get the idea...the band is called "BLAZE" and man do they ever. Played some of the standards, 3 of which we on our JAZZ week CD compilation

at one point Brannon was playing the entire percussive part on one symbol...he can get 3-4 sounds out of each trip down the symbol..A truly amazing player...The guy must be about 30. In his hands the drums becomes an instrument of rare beauty and imagination...WOW! Such power displayed in his quiet approach is rare and extreme

Then is was off the the re-grand opening of Steamboat. Vallejo was the headliner. It was so crowed that drinks and bathroom breaks were hard to come by..DOH!

The new live music room there is fantastic.. tiered tables in a large room. I look forward to seeing many bands in the very near future at this new haunt...it should become the best OF Austin within a few months

Sunday night, for instance, my friend Stephen Doster does his Beatles tribute show. As a rule I loath anyone playing Beatles but Stephen always delivers the goods like no other

I'll get a couple of "Blaze" tunes up for thread sampling soon

ah..to live in Austin. Lots going on tonight..could I? Should I? <gg>
