The fascists saw no sense in using the slave labour of Ukrainian Jews. When the Germans captured Ukrainian cities, they just gathered the Jewish population together in several days or weeks and shot them all. The German authorities promised the Jews, they would be delivered to other regions far away from the front line where they would live and work. So appeared the so called "ditches" in nearly all major cities of Ukraine where the Germans shot down and buried the Jews. Many of them were left without any signs and could be hardly found after the World War II. Vassily Grossman in his "Black Book" describes this awful place in detail. The most known Holocaust site throughout Ukraine is Babiy Yar in Kiev, the place where over 150000 Jews from Kiev and neighboring areas had been killed. To the 50th anniversary of the Babiy Yar tragedy there was established a monument in the shape of Menorah here. On September 29-30, 2001 here took place the memorial ceremonies devoted to the 60th anniversary of the massacre in Kiev. There was also established the monument for all Jewish children killed in the fire of the Holocaust.
