I think Bush's major speeches surprised a lot of people in that they where more eloquent then expected.

Unfortunately even major speeches concentrate a lot of sound bites, or you, might call them applause lines.

Rummy often seems refreshingly direct to me. Do you have a specific quote you object to? Was it something like Powell's Gulf War comment "First we will cut it off, and then we will kill it.", about the Iraqi army?

I think Hanson makes his points well in that article and he might be a good speech writer, but that article would probably not be something that any administration would want to use as a speech. They would want to soften some of the comments about our European allies or make them more indirect. Of course Hanson wasn't writing as a speech for the president or a senior administration official.
