Qualcomm has achieved support for every milestone in the CDMA1XEV ladder, including the CSM 5500. The GSM pyramid begins with the CSM & MSM 5200 chip series. CSM support will have to start creeping up the ladder for the MSM6200 & 6300, 6500 & 6600. Given the complete lack of visibility for any competing chip designs, Qualcomm should have complete pole position for all UMTS chip designs.

Europe will be in no special position to reject the Qualcomm chips supplied by Lucent and Nortel infrastructure build outs. I don't know where everyone thinks they will be able to get around Qualcomm's chips designs, much less their IPR.

I think the hardest work for Qualcomm is was realized in the unbelievable effort it must have taken to pull together entry level MSM and CSM chips in 12 months - not to mention a trial demonstration for GSM1X. The intitial phase required Qualcomm to design synchronous methods for asynchronous GSM base stations. They made the system damn near impossible to uncover - I am thankful Qualcomm cracked the codes in 12 months.

From here, ZIF technology pulls together all the advantages of CDMA 1XEV with GSM1X. Again, the only remaining pieces to the puzzle are related to the standardization of 1x/1XEV in 5 MHZ spectrum.
