China United Telecom Says Hurt By CDMA Handset Shortage

BEIJING (Dow Jones) China United Telecommunications on Tuesday accused hand set makers of holding back its subscriber growth by failing to prepare for the January launch of its Code Division Multiple Access network.

In comments carried on the state-run Xinhua News Agency, China United President Wang Jianzhou said the 19 licensed manufacturers of CDMA handsets in China failed to produce enough phones ahead of the Jan. 8 launch of the new network.

China United Telecom, the state-run parent company of overseas listed China Unicom Co . Ltd (CHU), launched CDMA this year in an attempt to rival China Mobile 's GSM, or Global System for Mobiles, network.

China United Telecom is the mainland's second largest mobile telephone operator, ranked only behind China Mobile , which lists its China Mobile (Hong Kong) Ltd. (CHL) unit.

Wang blamed the shortages of handsets on the failure of manufactures to realize the company could complete the rollout of the CDMA network in less than a year, the Xinhua report said.

China United Telecom's CDMA subscribers not only have a few varieties of handsets to chose from but also face the problem of poor quality, Wang said. He also blamed high prices of mid- and low-end CDMA handsets for exacerbating the situation.

The company is currently working with all 19 manufacturers to ensure a supply of about two million handsets by March. China United Telecom's CDMA network is currently undergoing a three-month trial during which users of the former Great Wall CDMA network previously operated by the military are being switched over to the new system.
