"Faith is the assent of the intellect to that which is believed."

Well, I think that IS profound, CH - even if my interpretation might not be the same as Tom's.

Here is my take: You don't find many atheists among the, er, "lower classes." At least, not informed atheism. But atheism is found among the intellectual class disproportionately (I am educatingly guessing). I think what we have here is a collision of intellect and faith. I think intellectuals are driven to find rational explanation in all observed phenomena; to fail to do so is a defeat of one's intellect -- unacceptable. Thus, I believe that intellectuals are commonly compelled to reject supernatural theories or explanations, which by definition cannot be validated through reason, but only through "faith." Faith can therefore only be found if one is willing to acknowledge that the human intellect (even the best) is woefully inadequate to explain the nature of existence. In short, faith cannot be found until the ego is subjugated.
