The simplest answer is in the figure depicting the GSM1X architecture, e.g. in Dr. J's 3GSM presentation: qualcomm.com Three types of handsets would be supported: 1. GSM/GPRS handsets, that essentially run on the existing network with the existing radio interface. 2. GSM/GSM1X handsets, which are multimode, in that they could operate on both the GSM core (and radio access) as well as the 1X overlay. 3. CDMA 1X handsets, which run only on the 1X radio access overlay. However, these would have SIM cards in order to be recognized by the GSM core network (which they would still use).

The MSM6300 chipset and system software enable handset manufacturers to integrate 3G CDMA2000 1X and 2G GSM/GPRS service into a single handset. The MSM6300 solution supports Release A of the CDMA2000 1X standard, offering data rates of up to 307 kilobits per second (kbps) on both the forward and reverse links, along with simultaneous voice and data services. The GSM and GPRS solution is Phase 2+ compliant, supporting class B, multi-slot class 8 data services with data rates of up to 40 kbps on the forward link. User identity is supported in both the R-UIM and SIM standards, with an integrated R-UIM/SIM controller. Sure, there is work to be done, but GSM1X handsets are the full recognition of MSM6300 chipsets.
