Magnetek Power Products Make Inroads in Transportation

- UTC Fuel Cells' Power Plant For Ford Incorporates Magnetek Power Conditioner

- Magnetek Provides Advanced Power Supply for Segway(TM) Human Transporter

LOS ANGELES, March 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Digital power conditioners developed by Magnetek, Inc. (NYSE: MAG - news), already widely used in communications and computers, are now providing clean, efficient energy for the transportation industry and some of its most intriguing new products.

Powering Ford

A Magnetek ``power conditioner'' is incorporated into the fuel cell power plant that recently began generating electricity for Ford Motor Company's North American Premier Automotive Group headquarters in Irvine, Calif. Built by UTC Fuel Cells, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX - news), the PC25(TM) fuel cell power plant produces 200 kilowatts of electricity and 900,000 Btus of heat, providing 25 percent of the 300,000-square-foot building's power. The heat is used to produce hot water for the facility, which houses the North American headquarters for Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo, as well as the global headquarters for Lincoln Mercury. Magnetek's digital power conditioner transforms the direct current generated by the fuel cell into alternating current required to run building services.

``This installation is yet another example of how UTC Fuel Cells' PC25 power plants can help meet California businesses' needs for reliable and clean energy,'' said William Miller, president of UTC Fuel Cells.

The Ford facility is a ``green building,'' meaning that it is designed to minimize the building's impact on the environment, including air quality. The building is the first in Orange County and only the third in California to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED TM) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Powering Segway HT

Magnetek also developed a very high-density power supply for the battery charging system of the Segway(TM) Human Transporter (HT), the first self- balancing, electric-powered transportation machine. Custom-designed by Magnetek to be self-contained in the machine's chassis, the power supply is part of the Segway HT's advanced battery charging system that converts alternating current from any standard utility wall outlet into the correct magnitude of direct current to charge the Segway HT's NiCd and NiMH batteries.

``Magnetek has been a vital member of our technical development team,'' said J. Douglas Field, Segway LLC's vice president, product development and chief engineer. ``Their advanced power supplies helped us meet our goal of providing a simple, standard charging system for our Segway HTs.''

Looks like Malhotra left the pot (HPOW) for the fire (DCH). I am still in the fire (and turned to ashes) and just bought some of the pot. Am I cooked? I love the fuel cells but think Ballard is overpriced.
