I think the chance that Bush Jr. knows anything about Admiral Perry and his voyage and contact with Japan is about nil. Bush screwed up on a combination of verbal gaffe, "centry and a half" versus "half a century" and the fact that he did know enough history implicitly to catch himself before he made the mistake. Heck, he probably doesn't even know now and just repeats another speech by his handlers. I really cannot imagine Bush caught in a subtle mistake! He has too many obvious mistakes for that.
