On Semi to add 6-inch fab line to plant in Slovakia for power devices Semiconductor Business News (02/26/02 12:28 p.m. EST) siliconstrategies.com PIESTANY, Slovakia-- On Semiconductor Corp. today announced plans to expand its chip-processing facility here with the addition of a second wafer-fab line to produce low-voltage MOS power devices. Phoenix-based On Semiconductor said it will install an advanced six-inch (150-mm) wafer frontend line in its 915,000-square-foot plant in Piestany. The first phase of the expansion is expected to be staffed and operational by early 2003. "On Semiconductor selected Piestany for this expansion project based on the facility's track record for quality and on-time delivery," said Walt Guy, the company's general manager at the Slovakian plant. "The wafer technology that will be implemented here is on the high end and is a major step forward for moving us into higher end process and equipment technologies." An investment value on the expansion was not released. Prior to 2001, On Semiconductor used the Piestany site for wafer manufacturing only, but last year the company decided to expand the number of business organizations at the cite supporting its European business objectives. Slovakia Electronics Industries a.s. (SEI) is the name of the legal entity of On Semiconductor's wholly owned subsidiary in the country.
