From the Qualcomm GSM1X press release -

<This solution introduces a GSM1x Mobile Switching Node (MSN) to interface an existing and unmodified GSM core network with an unmodified CDMA2000 radio access network. GSM1x terminals utilize a standard GSM Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) and are subject to standard GSM authentication. As a result, operators will be able to offer global roaming and service transparency between CDMA2000 1x and GSM networks without compromising their current infrastructure.>

The last sentence suggests that dual mode handsets would be able to roam between 1X CDMA networks and GSM/GPRS networks. IF a dual mode MSM6300 handset could roam on Unicom's CDMA1X and GSM networks, I don't see the practical difference between GSM1X.

It would be the same as DoCoMo's WCDMA handsets roaming on DoCoMo's PDC 2G networks when they can't access 3G WCDMA networks. this would still leave Unicom with the option to upgrade GSM core network and GSM air interface to GSM core network and 1X air interface.
