Interestingly enough, even though stock ownership in Japan has always been much less prevalent than in the U.S., the Nikkei peak at the end of 1989 came 40 yrs after the Japanese birth rate hit the end of a multi-year plateau and started a decline that still hasn't ended. That secular bear market is, therefore, the result of unfavorable demographics as well.
