not a history major but I see parallels. Their gold and silver colelcting is equal in essence to what the US has been doing, the gold and silver from that time equates to foreign invesmtent, foreign credit given us, etc now(money now is not what it was then, we collect money as they did)
so the US is accumulating wealth from all over and in my mind doing it so far beyond that justified by the industries you mentiont that they may as not be there and we are as much a paper tiger as they were, aside from a stronger military imo.

and further, our finance industry is just a self serving means of wealth accumulation completely out of whack with any underlying substance but for the confidence game.

In Bernstein's gold book, there's a quote by a Spaniard - "So much silver and money has always been poison to republics and cities...They believe money will keep them and it is not true: plowed fields, pastures, and fisheries are what gives us sustenance"

so switch those things above to what , automobiles, pc's, routers? big deal, koreans can do all that. Sure we will come up with the "next generation" this and that in many tech fields, but so what? someone has to still be willing to pay for it, because the US IS NOT paying for it except for what we PRINT. When the day comes that this dawns on everyone it will be too late. I'm not saying it will happen soon.

marginmike you mean that the US is breading the most excellent scamsters and thieves as most recently revealed in the Enron situation ........ CA ......... and the list goes on.

Just analyze the Durable Goods orders another scam ...... reporting 1.7 growth for December and 2.6 for January expected was 1.5% sound nice ? ....... oh well not so quick

Oh yea but the scamsters are working very hard ....... December was lowered by 0.9% so as a matter of fact Durable Goods orders actually came BELOW EXPECTATION
