I thought the oil embargo was a result of U.S. support for Israel during the 73 Arab-Israeli war.

I did too at the time. But in the last 30 years the price of oil in Saudi Arabia seems more tied to when a Bush needs to chase someone out of office than conflicts in Israel. Money can often transcend politics.
