Suppliers reaffirm support for second phase of GSM Association's M-Services Initiative

Cannes, France, 20 February 2002: Manufacturers and suppliers around the world have expressed continued support for the GSM Association's M-Services initiative to drive a consistent, open global platform for application and service delivery. Phase II of M-Services was announced by the GSM Association today at the start of the 2002 3GSM World Congress.

M-Services Phase II is a clear set of operator-delineated requirements - with GSMA Associate Member & broad industry input - that will assist the manufacturers in defining handset design, functionality and user interface to a universally recognised, open and non-proprietary set of principles. The adoption of M-Services by the industry will improve customer satisfaction levels and simplify the route to market for applications and services.

"With Multimedia Messaging (MMS) offering great potential for the data market, gaining the confidence of subscribers to access data services in a consistent and user friendly way is imperative," said Rob Conway, CEO of the GSM Association. "We have the commitment of the manufacturer community for this initiative going forward, as we had when M-Services was first launched last year. Now we have M-Services compliant handsets available on the market, the initiative will be driven by the consumer demand."

Italy's TIM has already introduced M-Services handsets in volume into its product portfolio, and globally operators such as AT&T Wireless, Vodafone Group, Telefonica, NTT DoCoMo, Bouygues Telecom, mmO2, One2One and the Orange Group among an overwhelming number that are fully supportive and committed to the programme.

"The aim of M-Services is to provide a consistent customer experience when using wireless data services. User confidence is one of the keys to success for the industry as we move forward, and it is imperative that we develop customer-focussed solutions," said Scott Fox, Chairman of the GSM Association. "The handset is the user interface. Our members want to make that element the best possible experience for consumers."

Phase II of the M-Services initiative has received ringing endorsements from all sectors of the wireless industry…
