Maybe so, but I don't believe that. Good people are smart people. That means they realize that now is not a good time to be randomly quitting your job. If they leave, it's because of an opportunity elsewhere. Others are generally encouraged to pursue other opportunities if their performance isn't up to snuff. That's the way it works in many of the companies I consult for. So attrition no doubt does include top performers, but in a recession, I guarantee you it also includes many not so hot performers. Sometimes companies are just looking for an excuse to unload bad performers and a recession is a great opportunity for that. The great companies will cut the bottom, while simultaneously increasing incentives for the top performers. I've seen this done in many many companies and in general, I think this is the best approach.
