The pen will be sold as the Ericsson Chat Pen from April or May. · The Ericsson T39 will be launched with a strong support in the USA next month · Verizon Wireless in the US have committed to a nationwide deployment of EMS · UCP AG have launched EMS services on their uboot portals · 12snap ran the first EMS based marketing programme · Trium were showing their 110M model which supports EMS and will be launched at CeBIT · Barry Jones, former CEO of Magic4, has set up his own company The Enhanced Messaging Consultancy Company, to propel the standard further forward. · Release 5 of the EMS standard completed · Magic4 shipping EMS clients (supporting release 5) to several manufacturers EMS has taken off only slowly and in a somewhat fragmented manner but momentum behind and support for the standard continues to increase on a weekly basis. Mobile Streams expects that more money will be made from EMS in 2002 than from MMS since MMS still needs to go through a similar incubation process to that which EMS has been going through. << >> Ericsson Switches Support From Nokia To Motorola As Ems Standards Are Completed Simon Buckingham 26 February 2002 Mobile Streams Those people used to dry and dull technical meetings were in for a surprise at the 3GPP meetings in Nice last week, as high drama and game theory came into play. The release 5 of the Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) standards were completed after Ericsson shifted its backing from a ZoomON/ Nokia proposal to one from Bijitec/Motorola. This was enough to get the Motorola backed proposals accepted as the line drawing standard within the EMS standards. Line drawing was initially submitted as a possible enhancement to EMS by Bijitec. Subsequently, Motorola with its iSketch and Zoomon with its vector graphics solutions submitted alternative proposals. In order to make a choice as to which technology would be accepted in the EMS standards, the various companies were asked to submit test results which showed the number of SMS messages it took to transmit one line drawing for various standard image. The idea is select an efficient protocol since few consumers would be able to pay for many SMS messages individually to send a line drawn image. After some of the test results were collected, alliances began to form with Ericsson and Nokia both initially supporting Zoomon’s proposals. Bijitec were thought to have a very efficient EMS technology but had no clear MMS roadmap, which their partnership with Motorola provided. An MMS roadmap is important since the EMS codec will be embedded in MMS phones too, so a single solution is more efficient that two separate technologies to handle EMS and MMS respectively. Then Ericsson switched its support and the standards were passed. Everyone was relieved that the other major innovation in EMS release 5 aside from line drawing - the addition of polyphonic ringtones - was passed with fewer problems. However Alcatel did stick to its MIDI based approach so the final specification is a compromise. Many observers of the EMS standards process expressed frustration and annoyance with the posturing that was seen as the various recent EMS meetings, but the standard has now finally been agreed. The days when SMS passed through the standards with little problem are long gone in these days of EMS and MMS - there is simply too much money to be made and lost from proprietary interests. The best technology still gets through the standards, but only if supported by compelling commercial alliances. Release 5 of EMS is complete, and will present the customer with an unprecedented standard and rich user experience. EMS has been enhanced yet again. << - Eric -
