Speaking Wednesday at an investors' conference in San Francisco , AMD Chief Financial Officer Robert Rivet said he expects that microprocessor sales will be in line with seasonal patterns for the first quarter. AMD last month forecasted first-quarter PC-processor shipments to be "at or near" the fourth quarter's 7.8 million units, with the average selling price "at or near" the prior quarter's $90 each. Analysts are looking for the chip maker to post a first-quarter loss of six cents a share and a second-quarter loss of two cents a share, according to a survey by Thomson Financial/First Call. In the year-earlier first quarter, AMD (AMD) earned $124.8 million, or 37 cents a share, on sales of $1.19 billion. In the second quarter, it earned $17.5 million, or five cents a share, on sales of $985.3 million. AMD repeated its expects to achieve profitability for the full year. In 2001, excluding items, the company earned $28.9 million, or nine cents a share, on sales of $3.89 billion. In January, archrival Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM: INTC - news) (INTC) said it expected first-quarter revenue of $6.4 billion to $7 billion, in line with analysts' estimates. Intel plans to provide a mid-quarter business update to its outlook on March 7 . Earlier this month, AMD agreed to buy Alchemy Semiconductor Inc., of Austin , Texas , for an undisclosed amount, giving AMD an entry into the hand-held sector. Alchemy was founded by engineers who helped develop the Alpha and StrongArm microprocessor chips for Digital Equipment Corp., which was purchased by Compaq Computer Corp (CPQ). Closely held Alchemy has been selling chips based on a design developed by MIPS Technology Inc. (MIPS), focusing on hand-held computers and other applications that require low power consumption. AMD until now had exclusively made microprocessors that use the basic internal instructions developed by Intel, and are mainly used to provide the calculating functions of PCs. Besides adding new technology, AMD said the deal allows it to focus on the hand-held computer market for the first time.
