Video is the true killer app for the Internet in the short term.

MM

I think you are correct with this exception.

No self-respecting videophile is going to view a movie on a computer screen.

What needs to happen for said videophiles(I am one) is to burn a download to a DVD+RW and play it back on a home theater system.

True video on demand and video file swapping peer to peer is another killer app

This just isn't going to happen till Hollywood and the RIAA have absolute control of their content, by way of encryption right to the display hardware. It's slowly moving in this direction with current generation HD displays, but this will take some time for these to get much penetration in the market place.

This stuff is a ways off. We'll see blue laser HDTV DVDs in the not too distant future though, I think a couple to three years to market.

We'll see how happy everyone is with the net and computers when we reach the stage where video swapping would be possible. Everyone will be paying monthly license fees just to boot their computers, and I'm pretty sure one will end up paying license fees to merely play their family videos.

Cisco and Microsoft should be in a position to profit when this stuff comes to fruition.
