I think there's a big difference between the elites of the world and the public opinion of this country at this moment. He cares little about the former and lots about the latter.

I hope so.

I would have to say credit for that goes to Bush. He picked a Defense Secretary who doesn't give a hoot about "public opinion" meaning, imo the dominant media apparatus...which of course has the potential to a president. So I think it took some character for Bush to pick a man like Rumsfeld.
