One of my partners was awaiting a jury verdict
in a civil case he defended a number of years ago.

He and his client went to a Chinese restaurant
for lunch and opened the fortune cookies.

His fortune read:

You never know the value of something
until you lose it.

Since a loss in this context translates
into a monetary award for the plaintiff,
as opposed to a defense verdict where
nothing is owed, this fortune
yielded indigestion<g>

As it turns out, however, he won.

I had a similar situation awaiting a verdict.
Every morning we'd all read our horoscopes
before trial commenced, including my opponent
and the courtroom personnel.

While the jury was out, the plaintiff solicited
settlement offers and we made an offer
somewhere around 20K as I recall. (He asked
the jury for a million, but asked me for 250K)

His horoscope the morning of the verdict read:
Don't sell anything too cheap.

We didn't settle and the jury awarded 6K.<g>

Goes to show that you have to have more
faith in yourself than fate.<g>

I have saved three fortunes that I received

I had forgotten what I had written yesterday. When I clicked on my Inbox and saw the above words, my immediate reaction was admiration for this person's wisdom and discipline. In many cases, when people receive a fortune, they embark on a spending spree of profound foolishness, and it's soon gone. This person had earned the privilege of doing a little boasting. Buy why to me?

I was amused when I read the whole message and realized how wrong I was.

Cheers, PW.
