New Zealand Watchdog OKs Merger Of Hewlett-Packard, Compaq Units WELLINGTON -(Dow Jones)- New Zealand 's competition watchdog, the Commerce Commission, said Thursday it has cleared the local units of Hewlett-Packard ( HWP) and Compaq Computer (NYSE: CPQ - news) Corp. (CPQ) to merge. Commission Chairman John Belgrave said the regulator is satisfied the proposed acquisition will not substantially lessen competition in any market. The U.S. parent companies plan to merge in a transaction that will see Compaq integrated with a newly formed unit of Hewlett-Packard.
