Taiwan strives to solve water shortage for tech park

TAIPEI, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Taiwan's government on Thursday decided to partially suspend water to farms to divert badly needed supplies to the island's crucial high-tech centre, the northern Hsinchu Science-based Park.

"The government definitely will help supply water to industry, as a commitment to keep industry from leaving Taiwan," the mass-circulation United Daily News quoted Vice Premier Lin Hsin-i as telling reporters late on Wednesday after holding a meeting to deal with the water shortage.

Taiwan is currently facing a water shortage because of a dry spell which has lasted for several weeks.

The Hsinchu Science-based Park is home to hundreds of high-tech firms, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co

(TSMC) <2330.TW>, the world's top microchip contract maker and rival United Microelectronics Corp <2303.TW>, as well as Acer Inc

<2306.TW>, Taiwan's top personal computer maker.

Taiwan's export-fuelled economy depends largely on the electronics industry, which has been moving an increasing number of manufacturing operations to low-cost China in recent years to remain competitive.
