A goodbye post to one of my heros...

SPIKE MILLIGAN
----------------------------------------------------------

Spike Milligan suggested The Times update his obituary when he was unwell

Milligan wrote to the newspaper's obituaries editor to tell him he had "not been feeling well lately."

He suggested The Times staff check his obituary to make sure it was up to date.

The Times quotes the letter as saying: "Would you check on my obituary as I have not been feeling well lately. My most recent exploit was trying to save Rye Hospital, would you please add this to my list of achievements. Yours ailing, Spike."

Milligan also wrote his own 1,000 word obituary in 1990.

The obituary listed his birth in India, his first sexual encounter, and his war escapades, about which he said: "Mentioned in dispatches: nothing positive, just mentioned."

At the end of each paragraph he included the phrase: "I wrote The Goon Show and died."

BTW he wrote several books about his WW2 experiences as a gunner in Africa and Italy. Well worth the read. An off beat view of those times.
